The area used to be more run down but you can see the effort going into the area to revitalize. The small stretch with hotel and restaurants felt safe and clean. A few blocks down it quickly begins to feel less secure, but these few blocks are great.

if it all possible, stay at the El Capitan hotel! Mercedes and ice area, but it has its bad areas too, great movie theaters, Mercedes Speedway, And the Merced theater for shows and concerts!

The room was spacious and clean, with a comfortable bed and a nice view of the city. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, especially when I needed directions to a local restaurant. "I was pleasantly surprised about the room and service here. Bed was super comfy, TV worked well with good channel selection and good location near stores and especially Black Bear Diner next door. Also liked the kitchen amenities and option for additional items downstairs if needed. Only hitch was we kept going into closet to get to bathroom since most hotels have bathroom next to door but was still ok."
"I was coming into town very late and they were cool with checking in at midnight. They were also very accommodating with letting me do a late checkout. I’m glad the ice machine and A/C were working, this was mid to late July, super hot. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. It was the perfect layover to head to Yosemite the next day. Will definitely stay again if I’m ever in the area. Thank you!"
"This was a quick overnight stay that was unplanned. I was very happy with this hotel. Great location with lots of food options and shopping. The area is safe and although it’s right off the freeway it was a quiet room. Check in was quick and staff was so friendly. Included breakfast was good, several options. Bed was very comfortable and bathroom was spacious and clean. "
"It was overall a great stay but my 1st room had a smoke detector beeping every 10-15 seconds and was very loud. I couldn't relax with the sound as it was ear-piercing. Told lady at the front desk and she said it was normal for it to do that. Knowing how a smoke detector works I told her no it's not, it's a low battery sound, can you please fix it. She said the same thing again about it being normal so I requested a new room which was given to me. No other rooms had alarms doing that. So I didn't like the fact that I was told something to me that was totally untrue and that I had to deal with it through the night. If I wouldn't have gotten a new room I'd have asked for a refund and went to the nearest Motel.
Overall everything was cool and I was thankful that I got a new room to sleep comfortably. I got the room due to me having stress as the highway 99 was terrible that day 7/3/25 and I got bad anxiety from driving and had to stop. My route from Sacramento to Bakersfield would have taken a total of over 8 hours to drive.
Thank you Motel 6 for accommodating me for that night. I slept great!!
