Great stay!

A fantastic stay at City Gate Hotel. Really enjoyed the large bedroom, the bar and restaurant downstairs, and the delicious breakfast.

8/10 Very good

Attractive quirky pub, surprisingly quiet in the centre of town. Very helpful and charming staff who sorted out a pricing discrepancy with Expedia for me. Very comfortable huge bed, good linen and well equipped room and bathroom. Looking just a little tired around the edges now in all honesty but still recommend.

Cute & Cosy

Lovely room, super comfy bed with quality amenities & furnishing. As a solo traveller I was a bit uncertain about no night staff/security but I felt safe & secure in the end. Would stay again

Lovely boutique hotel - room beautiful and loved the little touches - glass of port etc. Above a pub so clearly noise until closing time

Ok for a night

Nice, we booked a deluxe room. Bathroom was very small, and accessed by three steep stairs; it was almost in a ‘cubby’ hole in the room. Ok though for a one- night stay.

6/10 Good

Great location, but in need of refurb

The hotel is nice and centrally located walking distance down to the key side and into the city centre. The room sit on top of a pub so if you're on the first floor there can be a little bit of noise if they have a party in which they did on the Friday night that we were there. The bed was comfortable in a large room won't AC, however the Internet connection was a bit hit and miss sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't but other times it was painfully slow. For me, the bathroom really let the stay down there was black mould all around the shower cubicle and I can't help but feel that the grouting could've just been replaced pretty cheaply. I really felt that I didn't want to go in that shower but obviously had no choice. We did ask for our room to be cleaned as they asked us when we checked in and despite us being out for most of the day on Saturday they came in when we did so we had to turn them away as we needed to get ready to go out that Saturday evening. I'm sure at one point this hotel would've been absolutely beautiful, but it is in need of some refurbishment, but if you can get past the bathroom and want something reasonably priced in a great location, then go for it.

8/10 Very good

The decor is very well done and I found the bed to be extremely comfortable. The bathroom is very spacious and well presented. The only negative points I have about the room 5 is the seal round the shower screen is leaking. Meaning water pours onto the floor and has lead to mould and a damp smell in the corner of the room.

8/10 Very good

Modern, nicely decorated, clean, good location, just wish the staff were a bit more attentive. The reception was full of laundry on arrival, nobody was really allocated for the accommodation to check in. I found the bar area was used more of an office, laptops everywhere and laptop wires sprawled all over the tables. Honestly can’t fault the room. I think the staff let this place down.

Exeter never again

Receptionist was poor on check in. Beer and food was overpriced. Room was clean and nice but an early wake up by a brewery delivery truck right outside the bedroom was unexpected and not a place myself or my wife would recommend to anyone.

8/10 Very good

Very conveniently positioned hotel.

The position of the hotel is perfect for a visit to Exeter. It is just a short walk from the main centre. The personnel who work at the hotel were helpful and friendly. The room was clean and we had super thick towels. However, the hotel is in need of attention. The paintwork needs painting and the carpets in the corridors need an upgrade; the taps in our room were twisted as they moved from the base; the sash windows do not work and we needed a small log to keep them open. In addition, the TV was not reliable although the manageress tried to assist with it. We ate breakfast there one morning. There was a range of choices although combining them was pricey. We found a better value breakfast close to the cathedral. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed our stay. Bedroom good with lots of little extras available. However could do with some additional hand rails to help anyone walking with a stick (eg hand rails are not on all staircases).Very creaky floor, had our fingers crossed all was secure.
