The Carlton Park hotel used to be a grand place, but it has clearly fallen on hard times. That is reflected in almost every aspect of the place. I had to write a list of the issues we had because there were too many, split into outright bad and nice-to-haves.
Bad
- The 'secure' door to the rooms corridor was never secure
- the WiFi regularly cut in and out, and was not particularly fast
- The room was unclean, dust all over, bathroom tiles were grubby, not fully vacuumed
- shower sprays past the shower door soaking the bathroom, and the fan can't keep up with moisture. The temperature control also couldn't go cold enough.
- walks are paper thin. We could hear our neighbours TV on all night.
- the windows couldn't open, but we somehow still smelled cigarette smoke from time to time - through the walls?!
Nice to haves:
- pillows were far too thin, would have needed extras
- duvet was rubbish but manageable
- half the place is old, worn but grand. The other half is cheap replacements which look tatty.
The worst part is the Brentwood hotel right next door does all of the above without issue, and for only very little extra cost!
This place was not suitable for us as a couple visiting family. Despite booking for 2 nights we only stayed the 1. I would not recommend staying here unless you're looking for a cheap stop for working travel, and even then I would hesitate.
