I actually spoke with my wife about Japan and if we had the ability to retire or move to Japan we would move to Hiroshima. The city has everything that Tokyo has but is at a calmer and easier pace, AND momiji manju is the best... and Miyajima Island

Hiroshima is very tourist friendly. English signs and announcements on public transportation and at sight seeing spots. Stores and museums often have employees who can speak English, and the locals are very nice and welcoming visitors.

Miyajima Island and the floating shrine is a must see! There are tame deer on this island, just like Nara but not as many deer. I could have spent a few days there. If you like oysters, Hiroshima is the place to visit!
