Crozant (Creuse). Ruines de la forteresse de Crozant (XIIIe, XVe). Aux portes de l'ancienne province de la Marche*, la forteresse est située sur un éperon granitique surplombant le confluent de la Creuse et de la Sédelle. 
 Le relief particulier du site, l'avait probablement fait choisir comme lieu de défense depuis le néolithique. Trois époques d'installation sont incontestables : le bronze moyen, le bronze final et le premier âge du fer (Sondages archéologiques effectués entre 1964 et 1974 par Benjamin Lasnier) Les premières fortifications peuvent peut être être attribuées aux Wisigoths* qui cherchaient à protéger leur frontière septentrionale des Goths. Le nom même de Crozant, forme dérivée de "Crozenc", serait d'origine franque (suffixe germanique "enc")*. Les premières traces écrites sur Crozant remontent au début du XIème siècle. D'après les chroniques de Geoffroy de Vigeois, Gérald (ou Géraud ou Gérard), comte de Crozant et vicomte de Bridiers, vend la Villa Sosterranea (La Souterraine dans la Creuse) à l'Abbaye Saint-Martial de Limoges. Par contre, le château n'est cité, dans les mêmes Chroniques, que vers le milieu du XIIe siècle (1140). (généalogie par Cedric de Crozant de Bridiers). La construction la plus ancienne serait la base du donjon carré qui pourrait remonter au XIIe siècle. En 1177, le comté de la Marche, dont Crozant fait partie, est cédé au duc-roi Henri II Plantagenêt. Le château prit son aspect définitif au XIIIème siècle, alors que Crozant appartenait à Hugues X de Lusignan*. C'est à cette époque, sous l'influence de sa femme, Isabelle d'Angoulême, veuve de Jean Sans Terre, mère de Henri III d'Angleterre, que les constructions les plus importantes sont réalisées (Tour d'Isabelle / 1217-1245, Tour du Renard, Tour Colin). Après les Lusignans, se succéderont comme Comtes de la Marche et propriétaires de Crozant, des Bourbons, des Armagnacs, puis de nouveau des Bourbons. Le 22 août 1356, le château de Crozant résiste aux assauts des anglo-gascons du Prince Noir* qui mettront le village à sac. Au XVe siècle, suite aux dégâts de la guerre de Cent Ans, Charles VII fit restaurer le château, le rendant habitable. Le Donjon est aménagé avec fenêtres à coussièges* et cheminées,sur 3 étages. Le château perd alors son caractère défensif. Pendant les guerres de religion, le château passera de mains catholiques à protestantes, puis de nouveau catholiques. "Une reconstruction de la courtine et une réfection des parements de la tour pourraient avoir été réalisées à l’issue d’un tremblement de terre en 1606. Cet événement, s’il n’a pas ruiné immédiatement la tour, l’a largement fragilisée. a complété sa destruction. Les effondrements qui en découlent entraînant l’abandon définitif de ce secteur du site castral interviennent quelques années plus tard". (Patrick Bouvart, « Crozant », ADLFI. Archéologie de la France - Informations , Limousin) La forteresse abandonnée servira de carrière aux villageois. Un acte de vente de 1640 précise que le château était en ruines. Plusieurs fois revendu, le site est devenu propriété de la commune en 1994. Depuis l’aube des temps, les pèlerins qui se rendent à Saint Jacques de Compostelle en venant du Nord ont emprunté ce chemin qui est toujours d’actualité. Le site des ruines de Crozant, en raison de la présence en hiver d’espèces particulières de chauves-souris, fait partie de la liste départementale des sites précis d’intérêt biologique remarquable. "La splendeur des paysages de la vallée de la Creuse a attiré de nombreux artistes comme Monnet. Ce foyer artistique est notamment né grâce à l’attachement de Georges Sand pour cette région qu’elle fréquente de 1827 jusqu’à sa mort en 1876. Le poète Maurice Rollinat a également participé au développement de la notoriété de ce site. Dès le salon officiel de la peinture à Paris en 1864, Crozant parvient à attirer de nombreux artistes tels que le peintre impressionniste Guillaumin. C’est également à cette date que ce mouvement est appelé « Ecole de Crozant ». Dès lors, la vallée devient une source d’inspiration pour de nombreux artistes venant de toute l’Europe afin de s’adonner à l’art du paysage. Ces derniers sont séduits par l’authenticité des lieux, la pureté de la lumière et la vivacité des coloris. Au cœur du mouvement qui attira de nombreux peintres, Crozant est le site le plus représenté." (Antoine Chilloux - Aurore Coudert - Séverine Michaud - Maëlle Vergne. Projet pour les visites des ruines de Crozant - Mars 2011- Master Valorisation du patrimoine et aménagement du territoire - Université de Limoges et Lycée agricole d’Ahun) La Marche, qui fut aussi un comté, couvrait presque totalement le département actuel de la Creuse, moins d'une dizaine de cantons de Haute Vienne, et quelques cantons de l'Indre et de la Charente.La Marche constituait la limite nord de l'occitan. La province de la Marche sera supprimée en 1790. Les Wisigoths (anciennement Tervinges de "tervingi"= gens de la forêt), constituent avec les ostrogoths (greutungi = gens de la grève), un des deux rameaux du peuple des Goths. Les Wisigoths, installés entre Dniepr et Danube, sont contraint de fuir vers l'Ouest, poussés par l'avancée des Huns. Après s'être installés dans les Balkans, il mettent Rome à sac en 410. Vers 480, le royaume wisigothique à son apogée s'étendra de la Loire à Gibraltar et de l'Atlantique aux Alpes. Le déclin des Wisigoths arianisés commencera en 507 avec la défaite de Vouillé, face aux francs de Clovis, roi chrétien. Les dernière possessions, nord du Portugal et Galice, seront conquises par les musulmans en 711. Le suffixe "enc" serait d'origine germanique, il indiquerait l'origine. Le toponyme de l'ancienne province de la Marche ne dérive t-il pas, lui aussi, du germanique "marka" ( limite, frontière). Mais on remarquera que le suffixe "enc" est également très présent en occitan pourtant faiblement germanisé. Le suffixe "enc" rappelle également les Ligures. En 1200, la fiancée de son père Hugues IX de Lusignan, Isabelle Taillefer, héritière du comté d'Angoulême est enlevée par le roi d'Angleterre Jean sans Terre. Cette enlèvement n'a rien de "romantique", il s'agit juste d'empêcher l'alliance du roi de France avec le puissant comte de Lusignan. Depuis ce scandale, les Lusignan sont dans le camp capétien et hostiles aux intérêts Plantagenêt. Philippe Auguste, profitera de ce "fait divers" pour déclencher « la commise » des terres de Jean. C'est le début du démantèlement de l'empire Plantagenêt sur le continent. Isabelle deviendra reine "consort" d'Angleterre. A la mort de Jean sans Terre en octobre 2016, son fils aîné deviendra roi d'Angleterre ( Henri III). En 1220, Isabelle épouse Hugues X de Lusignan, comte de la Marche, le fils de son ancien fiancé. C'est probablement Isabelle qui amène Hugues de Lusignan à organiser un front commun avec son fils Henri III d'Angleterre, contre le roi de France Louis IX. Le roi anglais organise alors, une expédition armée contre le roi de France, dans le Poitou . Ses troupes sont battues à Taillebourg, le 21 juillet 12423. Hugues de Lusignan se ralliera à nouveau au roi de France. Le Prince Noir (Edouard de Woodstock, fils du souverain anglais Edouard III) a quitté l' Angleterre et débarqué en Aquitaine en 1355 afin de veiller à la protection des possessions anglo-gasconnes. Le 4 août 1356 débute, à partir de Bordeaux, une campagne, ou plutôt une chevauchée, qui dévastera une grande partie du Bergeracois, du Périgord, du Nontronnais, du Confolentais, du Nord-Ouest du Limousin, de la Marche, du Boischaut, de la Champagne berrichonne, du Berry, de la Sologne, du Sud de la Touraine et du Poitou, et se terminera, malgré la supériorité numérique française, par le désastre de Poitiers, le 19 septembre 1356, 10 ans après celui de Crécy. Dans la déroute, beaucoup de chevaliers sont faits prisonniers, d'autres abandonnent le roi Jean II le Bon qui est, lui même, fait prisonnier ainsi que son fils Philippe le Hardi (souvenez vous : «Père, gardez-vous à droite, père, gardez-vous à gauche !»).
